Molendinarius, the founder of Latinum, Schola,Universitas Scholarium, ΔIAΛOΓOI
ATTIKOI and a handful of
other sites devoted to teaching Latin, is concerned that after
having a continuous history as a spoken language since the fall of
Rome,Latin now teeters on the edge of extinction as a spoken language.
Most Latin
courses teach Latin in translation, treating it as a kind of secret
code that has to be de-coded into a second language in order to be
understood. Few Latin teachers have the ability to speak the language,
and so are unable to teach it as a spoken idiom.
Latinum rejects this methodology - the aim of the course materials
offered here is to enable the student to understand and read Latin in
Latin.
As of December 2009, Latinum offers:
1. Three complete audio courses - the enormous Adler course, with over
600 episodes, and two short courses, D'Ooge, and Underwood. In additon,
Comenius' Latin course is in the process of being recorded - a
project that will take some years to complete.
2. Latin-English materials for text study - colloquia and readers.
3. Stories in simple Latin for 'comprehensible input'.
4. Vocabulary building tools.
5. Videos (at present only available on YouTube)
6. Illustrated Latin booklets on the Tar Heel reader site ( approx 100
produced by Latinum to date)
7. In addition, a collection of random stuff, like poetry, letters, and
songs, all read aloud and available on the podcast.
8. Latinum also acts as a clearinghouse for Latin audio produced
by a variety of other scholars, comprising selected readings of poetry
and Latin prose.
